Written Spanish for Intermediate Learners

There is a specific frustration that hits at the intermediate stage: you understand most of what you read, but your own writing still sounds mechanical. Sentences come out grammatically possible but not natural. This program targets that gap directly.

The focus of this program

Written fluency at this level is about more than grammar. It involves register — knowing when to use formal versus informal constructions — and coherence, meaning how ideas connect across a paragraph rather than just within a sentence.

You will work with authentic Spanish texts: newspaper opinion pieces, formal emails, academic abstracts, and literary excerpts. Each text type has its own conventions, and this program maps those conventions explicitly rather than leaving you to absorb them by exposure alone.

Writing feedback process

Every participant submits two written pieces per week. Feedback goes beyond error correction — it addresses structure, register, and word choice. You will see annotated versions of your own writing alongside model texts that demonstrate the same task done well.

Grammar topics covered

Subjunctive mood in written contexts, complex subordinate clauses, passive constructions, and the nuances between ser and estar in descriptive writing. These are the structures that separate intermediate from advanced written Spanish.

The program runs over eight weeks with a maximum of 12 participants per cohort. That size is deliberate — individual feedback at this level requires time, and larger groups make it impractical.
